Explore the stunning ruins of a bygone civilization with an expert guide who will take you two thousand years back to the ancient Roman city of Pompeii and nearby Herculaneum. Learn stories of times gone by as your expert guide reveals life before its dramatic destruction in AD 79.
Pompeii and Herculaneum, two ancient cities doomed by the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site to preserve their incredible cultural significance.
Their archaeological remains offer unparalleled insight into life at the time, from architecture to artifacts, giving us a glimpse into our past with startling clarity.
Our guided tour of Pompeii and Herculaneum will start at the entrance to the Pompeii excavations, in Piazza Anfiteatro.
Here, you will find our guide waiting for you (we remind you that our tour guides are experts and officials of the archaeological site, qualified and with a regular license). You will recognize it from the sign bearing the AroundVesuvio logo.
After some recommendations and general information, the guide will take you on a journey back in time, to reveal secrets and anecdotes of Pompeii and its fascinating history.
You will follow in the footsteps of those who tried to escape destruction, crossing Via dell'Abbondanza. You will admire the impressive frescoed domus (villas), the theatre, the Forum complex and, you will take a look at the Lupanare, the ancient brothel of the city.
At the end of the visit, you will have some time to refresh yourself before resuming the tour. Our driver will pick you up with a minivan to take you to the nearby excavations of Herculaneum.
Here, always in the company of one of our guides, you will enter the ancient city of Herculaneum, smaller than Pompeii, but no less fascinating.
Despite sharing a common destiny, Herculaneum and Pompeii offer two unique insights into the past and different levels of conservation.
Herculaneum was a seaside resort that the Roman elite preferred for holidays. This explains the discovery of villas with more precious decorations than those of Pompeii, a city mainly of merchants.
During the eruption of 79 AD, the city was covered by a pyroclastic cloud which, as it cooled, assumed a composition similar to mud capable of penetrating everywhere, preventing the decomposition of materials. This has made it possible to find many objects of common use in excellent condition as well as the most extraordinary discoveries of Papyri (books of the time), boats, amphorae, statues, bas-reliefs, splendid monuments and excellent frescoes.
Pompeii and Herculaneum are two attractions that attract thousands of visitors from all over the world every year.
Each of them has so much to tell and to reveal. This is why it is important to let yourself be guided in their discovery by an expert guide. Having one available all to yourself will help you fully enjoy this experience.
